More Than Meets the Eye:Carter’s Story

When Carter’s eyes began to cross, his family found a caring team that connected them to right eye care and simple tools at home—now he’s walking, starting to sign, and showing how early help can open doors for a child.

I noticed Carter's eyes shortly after coming home from the hospital. At first his pupils looked strange and then they began crossing. We located a great opthamologist and found Carter has a keyhole eye and he would need strabismus surgery to straighten his eyes. The NICU made the referral to Early Intervention services.

Carter has made a lot of progress in his development. He is now walking and is starting to do a few signs. Without the help of his EIS and other therapist, I do not know where Carter would be today. Our EIS has been awesome in helping connect with the appropriate doctors and therapist Carter needed. Also she has provided me with activities and strategies to help me understand my son better.
